Discover the Irish Origins of Halloween at Sydney’s Ghost Festival

Ireland’s Halloween Art Dark Trail will bring ancient Celtic traditions, storytelling and fire performances to Circular Quay from 19 October.

Sydney’s Circular Quay will take visitors on a journey into the origins of Halloween this October, as Tourism Ireland partners with Ghost Festival to present Ireland’s Halloween Art Dark Trail, an immersive experience celebrating the ancient Irish traditions that helped shape the globally recognised festival.

While Halloween is celebrated around the world with costumes, trick-or-treating and spooky festivities, its roots can be traced back centuries to Ireland and the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain.

Traditionally associated with the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, Samhain was a time of fire, rituals and storytelling. Celtic communities believed that during this period, the boundary between the living world and the otherworld became thinner, allowing the two realms to come closer together.

Over generations, Irish communities carried these customs across the world, contributing to the evolution of Halloween into the celebration enjoyed by millions today.

Exploring Halloween’s Ancient Roots

Beginning on 19 October 2026, Ireland’s Halloween Art Dark Trail will transform parts of Circular Quay into an interactive cultural experience, featuring five box installations that explore different chapters of Halloween’s history.

The installations will guide visitors from the ancient traditions of Ireland to the development of Halloween as a global celebration, offering an opportunity to discover the cultural heritage and stories behind the festival.

Through art and storytelling, the trail aims to introduce Sydneysiders to the historical significance of Samhain while highlighting Ireland’s enduring influence on Halloween traditions.

An Evening of Irish Storytelling and Fire

The experience will culminate on 31 October 2026, when an Irish storyteller and a fire show will bring elements of the ancient Samhain tradition to life.

Fire, music and storytelling were central to the festival’s cultural traditions, and the live performance will connect visitors with the atmosphere and heritage of Halloween’s Irish beginnings.

The event offers an opportunity for audiences to experience Halloween beyond its modern-day celebrations, exploring the folklore and traditions that have travelled through centuries and across continents.

Celebrating Ireland’s Cultural Heritage in Sydney

The collaboration between Tourism Ireland and Ghost Festival highlights the connection between Ireland’s rich cultural history and contemporary celebrations around the world.

By bringing Ireland’s Halloween story to one of Sydney’s best-known waterfront destinations, the trail aims to combine cultural discovery with art and live entertainment, inviting visitors to explore the origins of a festival that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

For those celebrating Halloween this year, Ireland’s Halloween Art Dark Trail offers a chance to discover the ancient stories behind the spooky season and experience the traditions that helped shape it.
