An excellent initiative by Dr S. Janakiraman, Consul General of India in Sydney, brought together senior Australian leaders, parliamentarians, dignitaries and a large gathering of the Indian diaspora to celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day.
The official reception and cultural event was hosted by Dr Janakiraman and Mrs Valarmathi at the International Convention Centre Sydney on Sunday, 16 August 2026.
The distinguished gathering was attended by NSW Premier Chris Minns and Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales. Several federal and state parliamentarians, community leaders, diplomats and other dignitaries also joined the celebration.
A significant number of Indian Australians from across Sydney attended the event, reflecting the community’s deep pride in India’s journey and its strong connection with Australia.
The celebration highlighted India’s rich cultural heritage, democratic values and growing international influence. It also recognised the enormous contribution of the Indian diaspora to the social, cultural and economic life of New South Wales.
The presence of senior Australian leaders demonstrated the strength of the India–Australia relationship and the important role played by the Indian community in building closer ties between the two countries.
The memorable occasion reflected the Consulate General of India’s continued commitment to bringing the community together, celebrating India’s national milestones and strengthening the enduring friendship between India and Australia.
