NSW Government Calls on Coalition to Reject Divisive Rhetoric Targeting Australian-Indians

The NSW Minns Labor Government has called on the Liberal and National parties to explain what it describes as the continued targeting of the Australian-Indian community, following renewed comments by Coalition frontbencher Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price regarding migration.

In a media release issued on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, Premier Chris Minns and Acting Minister for Multiculturalism Kate Washington criticised recent remarks suggesting the Albanese Government is “importing” migrants from India, Africa and the Middle East for electoral purposes. The NSW Government described the claims as false, divisive and harmful to Australia’s multicultural society.

The statement noted that Senator Price had previously faced criticism over similar comments and questioned why such rhetoric had resurfaced. It also urged the Coalition to clearly distance itself from messages that single out migrant communities for political debate.

The NSW Government highlighted the significant contribution of Australian-Indians across the state, recognising their role in business, healthcare, education, construction, innovation and community life.

Premier Chris Minns said New South Wales is “the most successful multicultural society in the world” and emphasised that people from every background have helped build the state.

“Fear and division have never built a better community. If you work hard, contribute to your community and believe in this country, then you belong here,” the Premier said.

Acting Minister for Multiculturalism Kate Washington described the suggestion that Australian-Indians were being “imported” for votes as “offensive, false and insulting” to the hard work and achievements of hundreds of thousands of Australians of Indian heritage.

She said Australian-Indians have made immense contributions to New South Wales through their talent, determination and commitment, while warning against rhetoric that undermines social cohesion.

“The Minns Labor Government stands with our Australian-Indian community and every multicultural community across our state. We will always call out attempts to undermine social cohesion through fear, misinformation and division,” Minister Washington said.

The media release also called on the NSW Liberal Party and Opposition Leader Kellie Sloane to join Labor in rejecting attempts to single out Australian-Indians for political gain, reaffirming the NSW Government’s commitment to supporting multicultural communities across the state.
