There are restaurants that serve great food, and then there are restaurants that create an experience. Our recent evening at Kolkata Cricket Club at Crown Melbourne was firmly in the latter category.
From the moment we arrived, it was evident why the restaurant has quickly established itself as one of Melbourne’s standout Indian dining destinations. The elegant interiors blend old-world Kolkata charm with contemporary sophistication, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that is equally suited to a relaxed dinner or a special celebration. The attentive, knowledgeable and genuinely welcoming service complemented the evening perfectly, making every guest feel valued.
We enjoyed the restaurant’s Standard Set Menu, an impressive journey through diverse Indian flavours and regional influences.
The evening began with a trio of beautifully presented chaat-style starters.
The Puchka delivered a delightful burst of tangy, spicy flavours, while the Beetroot Chop offered a crisp exterior with a deliciously soft and earthy centre. The standout surprise was the Tuna Jhal Muri, a creative interpretation of the iconic Kolkata street snack that balanced texture, freshness and spice beautifully.
For the mains, every dish showcased careful attention to flavour and presentation.
The Matar Kulcha was comforting and satisfying, while the Tandoori Lamb was perfectly cooked, tender and delicately smoky from the tandoor. The Butter Chicken lived up to its reputation with its rich, velvety sauce, complemented by the deeply flavoured Kosha Mangsho, a traditional Bengali slow-cooked lamb curry that reflected the restaurant’s heritage. The creamy Dal Makhani, fragrant Golden Basmati Rice and freshly baked naan completed a meal that celebrated both authenticity and refinement.
To finish, the Chena Gulab Jamun provided the perfect sweet ending, light, delicate and beautifully balanced.
What impressed us most was the consistency across every course. Each dish arrived beautifully presented, the pacing of the meal was excellent, and the staff ensured our experience remained seamless throughout the evening.
Kolkata Cricket Club has earned widespread recognition for its contemporary approach to Indian cuisine under acclaimed chef Mischa Tropp, including a Chef’s Hat in 2025.
