Prime Minister Albanese will formally welcome Prime Minister Modi during the three-day visit, highlighting the growing importance of the Australia-India relationship. The summit is expected to focus on expanding collaboration in trade, defence, security, technology, and other areas of mutual interest.
Australia regards India—the world’s fourth-largest and one of the fastest-growing economies—as a critical economic partner. The relationship between the two nations is anchored in their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, supported by strong economic ties and vibrant people-to-people and cultural connections.
The two leaders last met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025. Their upcoming meeting in Melbourne is expected to build on the momentum of recent engagements and reinforce the shared commitment to a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
Welcoming the visit, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he was honoured to host Prime Minister Modi for the Annual Leaders’ Summit. He described the Australia-India relationship as being “more consequential than ever,” adding that the partnership promotes peace, stability, and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific.
Albanese also expressed his eagerness to further strengthen the deep and enduring partnership between the two countries.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit is expected to further enhance strategic cooperation and reaffirm the shared vision of Australia and India for regional growth, security, and economic prosperity.
