Australia Rolls Out the Red Carpet for Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Australia is preparing to welcome Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for a landmark three-day visit from 8 to 10 July 2026, as the two nations take another major step towards strengthening one of the Indo-Pacific’s most important strategic partnerships.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will host Prime Minister Modi in Melbourne for the Australia-India Annual Leaders’ Summit, where discussions are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, defence, critical technologies, energy, education, security and regional stability.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit comes at a time when Australia and India are enjoying unprecedented levels of engagement. With India now the world’s fourth-largest economy and one of its fastest-growing markets, the partnership is increasingly shaping economic opportunities and regional security across the Indo-Pacific.

The Australia-India relationship is built on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and strengthened by deep cultural ties, growing business links and the outstanding contribution of the Indian-Australian community, one of Australia’s fastest-growing and most successful multicultural communities.

The two Prime Ministers last met during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025, reaffirming their shared commitment to advancing cooperation across a broad range of strategic priorities. The Melbourne summit is expected to build on that momentum and deliver further outcomes that benefit both nations.

Announcing the visit, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted the significance of the relationship.

“I am honoured to welcome my friend Prime Minister Modi to Australia for our Annual Leaders’ Summit.”

“The Australia-India relationship has never been more consequential, and our partnership fosters peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.”

“I look forward to strengthening Australia and India’s deep partnership.”

Prime Minister Modi’s visit is expected to be one of the most significant international engagements hosted by Australia this year, drawing leaders from government, business and the wider community. It also reflects the growing influence of Australia-India relations in an increasingly interconnected and strategically important Indo-Pacific.
