ALDI Australia has removed a range of bath mats featuring images of Hindu deities after concerns were raised by members of the Hindu community, a move welcomed by Federal Member for Parramatta Andrew Charlton MP.
The products, which included bathroom floor mats displaying images of Hindu Gods such as Lord Shiva, attracted criticism from members of the Hindu community who considered their use on floor coverings to be disrespectful to sacred religious figures.
Parramatta, one of Australia’s most culturally diverse electorates and home to one of the country’s largest Hindu populations, saw community members voice their concerns regarding the products.
Andrew Charlton MP said he raised the matter directly with ALDI and thanked the retailer for responding promptly to community feedback.
“I thank ALDI for being cooperative and responsive to community concerns about these products,” Mr Charlton said.
“The Hindu community in Parramatta is vibrant and proud, and I will always make sure their voices are heard.”
Following discussions, ALDI removed the Kirkton House Bath Mat and House Runner products from its website.
The decision has been welcomed by members of the Hindu community, who viewed the removal as a positive example of respectful engagement and cultural sensitivity by a major national retailer.
Australia’s Hindu community continues to play a significant role in the nation’s multicultural fabric, with growing contributions across business, education, healthcare and public life. Community leaders have often emphasised the importance of respectful representation of religious symbols and traditions in commercial products.
ALDI has not issued a public statement beyond removing the products from sale.
