A young Sydney-based software engineer and researcher is making waves on the global academic stage after securing a highly competitive fully funded PhD position at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Rahul Dev Tripathi, known for his outstanding achievements in software engineering, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and virtual reality research, described the opportunity as both rare and humbling amid growing funding cuts across many US universities.
“I feel incredibly lucky to receive a fully funded offer to study in the United States,” Rahul shared while reflecting on the milestone.
Rahul’s academic journey began with remarkable success at Sydney Grammar School, where he graduated with an exceptional ATAR of 99.50. He later completed First Class Honours in Software Engineering and Mathematics at University of New South Wales (UNSW).
During his time at UNSW, Rahul balanced intensive academic commitments while also launching AuthNTick Identity Services, an Australian-owned background screening and identity verification company. The startup provides workforce compliance and verification services including police checks, visa verification, identity validation, and pre-employment screening, while operating under approvals from the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) and alignment with the Defence Industry Security Program (DISP).
Rahul’s mentor, Professor Vijay Sivaraman, praised his impressive portfolio and contributions across AI, cybersecurity, networking systems, and virtual reality research.
Offering advice to aspiring researchers and university students, Rahul encouraged students to actively engage with senior researchers and funded projects to discover their interests and gain practical exposure.
“While studying at UNSW, I initially wasn’t sure what my specific research interests were,” Rahul explained. “I started investigating the projects being funded by my department and identifying the postdoctoral and PhD students working on them.”
His dedication soon translated into major academic achievements. In 2023, Rahul co-authored research papers presented at premier conferences including ACM SIGMETRICS and IEEE, focusing on virtual reality networking and user experience under varying network conditions.
He also co-invented a patent related to metaverse monitoring technology and presented his work before leading global technology figures, including the AWS Chief Information Security Officer, while showcasing research findings at MetaCom in Hong Kong.
Rahul’s family expressed immense pride in his achievement. His father, Dev Tripathi, mother Gunjan Tripathi, and younger brother Pranay Tripathi said they are excited to see him begin the next chapter of his academic and research journey at UCLA.
As technology and digital innovation continue reshaping industries worldwide, Rahul Dev Tripathi’s success stands as a powerful example of how local talent from Sydney is earning recognition on the world stage through hard work, research excellence, and entrepreneurial vision.
