As universities across New South Wales welcome students back for O-Week 2026, licensed venues are being encouraged to help foster safe, welcoming and enjoyable spaces for students as they begin their university journey.
Liquor & Gaming NSW (L&GNSW) said O-Week is a significant milestone for both new and returning students, with pubs, bars and clubs often forming part of early social experiences.
Executive Director of Regulatory Operations Dimitri Argeres said venues play an important role in setting the tone for responsible and positive celebrations.
“O-Week is an exciting time for students, and licensed venues are central to helping them have a memorable start to the year,” Mr Argeres said.
“By following responsible service practices, conducting age ID checks and keeping safety front-of-mind, venues can help ensure a positive experience for everyone.”
Throughout O-Week, L&GNSW inspectors will be present across the state to offer guidance, answer questions and support venues in ensuring promotions and events meet regulatory standards.
Mr Argeres said the focus during this period is on collaboration rather than enforcement, with an emphasis on education and shared responsibility.
“Universities hold O-Week either this week or in the weeks leading up to the start of term. While these events are about socialising and celebration, it’s important that venues remain mindful of their obligations to students, staff and the broader community,” he said.
Venues have also been reminded to avoid promotions that may encourage rapid or extended alcohol consumption. L&GNSW recently identified a small number of extended “happy hour”-style promotions, including one Wollongong venue offering discounted drinks over an extended timeframe, which was subsequently adjusted to meet regulatory expectations.
