The Delhi government is considering plans to transform the defunct Rajghat Power Station into a vibrant cultural and entertainment destination, aimed at boosting the capital’s night-time economy and creating new public spaces along the Yamuna riverfront.

Spread across nearly 28 acres, the abandoned thermal power plant is being explored for redevelopment into a multi-use venue featuring live music concerts, Sufi evenings, cafés, open-air performance arenas and immersive entertainment zones. Officials say the proposal seeks to repurpose the industrial site into a landmark destination that blends culture, recreation and tourism.

According to senior government officials, the project is currently at the planning stage. Once a preliminary proposal is finalised, it will be placed before the Cabinet for approval and financial sanction, followed by the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR).

The redevelopment plan draws inspiration from successful global examples such as New York’s High Line and London’s Battersea Power Station, both of which were converted from industrial infrastructure into major cultural and public attractions.

Officials noted that Delhi currently has limited options for residents seeking leisure and entertainment at night beyond shopping malls and cinemas. The proposed transformation of Rajghat is expected to address this gap while also enhancing the city’s tourism appeal and generating revenue.

Plans under consideration include rooftop cafés, live performance venues, indoor gaming zones and leisure spaces offering views of the illuminated chimney structure and the Yamuna. Together, these elements are intended to create a layered night-time economy that caters to families, young audiences and cultural enthusiasts alike.

If approved, the project could mark a significant step in reimagining Delhi’s industrial heritage while expanding its cultural and entertainment landscape.
