Residents in Northcote and surrounding suburbs now have access to a new Medicare Urgent Care Clinic, which has opened at 42 Separation Street, Northcote. The clinic operates seven days a week with extended hours and does not require appointments.
The service is designed for medical issues that need prompt attention but are not life-threatening, offering an alternative to hospital emergency departments for conditions such as minor cuts, viral infections, sprains, and similar injuries. All consultations at the clinic are bulk billed, meaning patients are not charged out-of-pocket costs.
According to recent data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, non-urgent presentations to Victorian emergency departments have decreased by 6.1 per cent, a trend linked to the expansion of Medicare Urgent Care Clinics across the state . These clinics aim to redirect patients with non-emergency needs to more appropriate community-based care settings.
Across Victoria, 29 Medicare Urgent Care Clinics are planned once the current rollout is complete. Nationally, the broader objective is to ensure that most Australians can access an urgent care clinic within a 20-minute drive.
Since the first Medicare Urgent Care Clinics opened in June 2023, more than 2.2 million people have used the service nationwide, including over 474,000 patients in Victoria . Data indicates that:
- Over one in four patients are children under 15
- Around one quarter of visits occur on weekends
- Another one quarter take place after normal weekday hours
This usage pattern highlights the role of urgent care clinics in providing accessible care outside standard GP hours.
The Northcote Medicare Urgent Care Clinic is commissioned by the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network and operated by Your Community Health, a long-standing local provider. In addition to urgent medical treatment, the clinic can connect patients to a broader range of health and community services, including dental care, allied health, mental health support, and social services.
The opening of the clinic adds another option for residents seeking timely medical attention without the need to attend a hospital emergency department, particularly during evenings and weekends.
