New Delhi, January 26:
India celebrated its Republic Day on Sunday with grandeur and patriotic fervour, marking the day the Constitution of India came into force in 1950, formally declaring the nation a sovereign, democratic republic.

The main ceremony was held at Kartavya Path in New Delhi, where the President of India unfurled the national flag and took the salute during the grand Republic Day parade. The event showcased India’s military strength, cultural diversity and democratic values, drawing participation from the armed forces, paramilitary units, school children and state tableaux.

The parade featured impressive marching contingents from the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, along with breathtaking fly-pasts by fighter aircraft and helicopters of the Indian Air Force. Colourful tableaux from different states and Union Territories highlighted India’s rich heritage, traditions and development initiatives.

Across the country, Republic Day was celebrated with flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programmes and patriotic events in schools, colleges, government offices and residential societies. Citizens paid tribute to freedom fighters and constitutional leaders who laid the foundation of modern India.

In his message to the nation, leaders emphasised the importance of unity, constitutional values and collective responsibility in building a stronger and more inclusive India. Special attention was also given to themes such as women empowerment, innovation, national security and social harmony.

As a mark of respect to the occasion, public offices, banks and stock markets remained closed, while security was tightened in major cities to ensure peaceful celebrations.

Republic Day holds special significance as it reminds citizens of their rights and duties enshrined in the Constitution. January 26 was chosen to honour the historic declaration of Purna Swaraj (Complete Independence) made in 1930 during India’s freedom struggle.

The day concluded with citizens sharing patriotic messages and tricolour displays across social media, reflecting a shared sense of pride and commitment towards the nation.
