Sydney has officially welcomed a spectacular new landmark with the opening of the New Sydney Fish Market at Blackwattle Bay – now recognised as the world’s best fish market.
Rising directly from Sydney Harbour, the stunning new building joins the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge as one of the city’s most iconic waterfront destinations. The Minns Labor Government expects the new market to attract over six million visitors each year, doubling the foot traffic of the former site.
The new Sydney Fish Market combines world-leading engineering, state-of-the-art technology, and bold architectural design inspired by the shape of fish scales. Under one spectacular roof, visitors can now enjoy:
- A fully operational wholesale fish market
- 40 retail and food outlets
- Casual takeaway to premium waterfront dining
- Educational experiences
- Public spaces for the community
Seafood lovers can explore double the retail space compared to the old market, making it one of the largest and most exciting food destinations in the Southern Hemisphere.
The new facility also provides advanced infrastructure for seafood wholesalers, including:
- Ice-making systems producing 50,000kg of ice daily
- Live crustacean tanks
- A brand-new publicly visible auction room
These features ensure Sydney remains a global leader in fresh seafood operations.
Beyond food, the precinct offers 6,000 square metres of public space, including:
- A waterfront promenade
- Water play art installations
- Creative community spaces
- Relaxation areas for families and visitors
The new Fish Market is designed not just as a shopping destination, but as a harbourfront experience where locals and tourists can gather, relax, and explore.
To support increased visitor numbers, additional transport options are being rolled out, including:
- Extra light rail services
- A new ferry wharf
- Upgrades to Wentworth Park light rail
- The upcoming Pyrmont Metro Station
These improvements will make the Fish Market easier to access from across Sydney.
The Minns Government has also partnered with Mirvac to redevelop the old Fish Market site, delivering:
- 1,400 new homes
- 2.6 hectares of public open space
- A new waterfront promenade
- Completion of a 15km foreshore walk from Rozelle Bay to Woolloomooloo
This project will further transform Sydney’s inner harbour for future generations.
NSW Premier Chris Minns described the Fish Market as a new symbol of Sydney’s global identity:
“Today Sydney opens the doors to what is undoubtedly the best fish market in the world — a new iconic landmark rising straight out of our harbour.”
