Marigolds and Mango Leaves: The Sacred Science Behind India’s Traditional Decor

By Kumud Merani

Dussehra has gone by, and soon will come Diwali — when the entrance doors of homes will be adorned with Marigold torans.

On any auspicious occasion in India, we find entrances decorated with marigolds and mango leaf garlands. Besides their beauty, there is also a scientific reason for this tradition.

The striking colour of the sturdy Marigolds, called Genda in Hindi, holds deep spiritual significance and symbolism. The hardy stalk of the flower signifies absolute faith in the divine, and its fragrance is believed to ward off negativity.

Marigolds are also natural insect repellents, and it is believed they possess anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.

You may call it pseudo-science, but mango leaves are considered very sacred. They are said to absorb negative energy entering the house and clear out negativity from places where large celebrations are held. Interestingly, mango leaves are thought to have the unique ability to absorb excess carbon dioxide.

As we approach Diwali, it’s worth reflecting on the deeper meanings behind these rituals. The vibrant marigolds and sacred mango leaves not only beautify our homes but also connect us to centuries-old traditions that blend nature, science, and the divine.
