Sydney’s Indian dining community has been shaken by a deadly gas leak at the popular Haveli restaurant in Riverstone, which left one person dead and seven others in hospital, including five police officers.
Emergency services were called to the restaurant—on the corner of Garfield Road and Railway Terrace—just after 9am on Tuesday following reports of a gas leak. NSW Ambulance confirmed that the hospitalised victims remain in stable condition. Two were taken to Hawkesbury District Hospital, three to Blacktown Hospital, and two to Mount Druitt Hospital.
According to Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Drewberry, carbon monoxide is a strong line of investigation. “The air quality in the whole building, on both levels, has been compromised,” he told reporters. Hazmat crews are using specialist detection equipment to identify the source of the leak and ensure the site is safe.
Police have begun their investigation and are collecting information while emergency crews continue to monitor the site. Authorities have not provided a timeframe for when the building will be declared safe.
Haveli, known for its authentic Indian cuisine, operates two outlets—Riverstone and Stanhope Gardens. The Riverstone restaurant will remain closed until further notice as investigations continue.
This tragic incident is a sobering reminder of the critical importance of gas safety in commercial kitchens. Indus Age will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as more details emerge.
