Getting a tattoo is an amazing feeling but maintaining it is difficult — even slight negligence can wreck an intriguing piece of body art and turn it into a disaster. Once the tattoo is complete, resist the temptation to open the plastic wrap on your tattoo and never touch your new tattoo with dirty hands.

Here are a few expert tips on how to care for your new tattoo:

• Once the tattoo is complete and you have left the parlour, resist the temptation to open the plastic wrap on it.
• After removing the cling wrap (after 2 hours minimum), wash your tattoo gently with your hands using a mild, fragrance- and alcohol-free soap or hand wash. Do not use a loofah to remove excess blood, ointment and ink.
• After washing the tattoo, pat it dry with tissue paper. Do not rub it and do not use a towel for drying off excess water.
• For moisturising, apply only a thin layer of Nivea cream — just enough to make the tattoo shine (your tattoo should be visible, and excess cream should be wiped off gently).
• Cover the tattoo with cling wrap again.
• Take a bath with cling wrap on the tattoo as direct water streams may adversely affect it.
• After the third day, apply Nivea cream every two hours for two weeks — you will notice that your tattoo looks glossy.
• Never touch your new tattoo with dirty hands or fingernails. Avoid tight-fitting clothes. Do not go to the gym or swimming for two weeks (depending on the healing of the tattoo).
• Do not expose your tattoo to direct sunlight. After the healing process is over, you can use sun-block.
• Instructions may vary from artist to artist; these are basic general care guidelines.
• Healing time varies with each individual and the area tattooed. With proper care, expect healing in two to three weeks.
