Young people are being urged to roll up their sleeves and help make their communities stronger ahead of National Youth Week, John Ajaka, Minister responsible for youth and volunteering today announced.
More than 100 young people attended the It Starts With Us! Forum at NSW Parliament House. The Forum was supported by NSW Volunteering and aimed to encourage young people to volunteer in their communities.
Mr Ajaka was joined at the Forum by the 2016 Young Australians of the Year and inspirational co-founders of Orange Sky Laundry, Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett.
“Volunteers are the backbone of our local communities. Whether it is organising weekend sport, helping those in need or patrolling our beaches – each and every volunteer deserves our thanks and appreciation,” Mr Ajaka said.
“Today’s Forum was not only about encouraging young people to step up and volunteer, but also encourage them to bring their often revolutionary and innovative ideas to the table.
“I especially want to thank Nic and Lucas from Orange Sky Laundry for taking the time to share their story and inspire others to follow in their footsteps.”
National Youth Week is on from Friday 8 April to Sunday 17 April 2016. Youth Week began as a NSW Government initiative in 1989, and has since grown to become a nationwide celebration of young people.
Last year, more than 80,000 young people participated in around 900 activities across NSW. The NSW Government supports local councils across the state to run activities and events with grants totaling more $250,000.
Orange Sky Laundry is Australia’s first mobile laundry service for the homeless. The NSW Government is providing Orange Sky Laundry with $50,000 in funding to provide services in NSW.
