Grants to support artistic talent in WA

• More than $509,000 in grants provided to artists to advance their artforms
• Applicants include young and Aboriginal artists, musicians, dancers and fashion designers

The State Government has provided more than $509,000 to various artists and community groups to undertake a range of projects including new exhibitions, circus performance, music and art.

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the grants would help young artists, musicians, fashion designers, Aboriginal artists and arts organisations to advance their artforms.

“The grants will provide recipients with capital to create new works, expand their local and international profile, and encourage community participation in arts and cultural activities,” Mr Day said.

“For example, Talitha Maslin, who received the 2015 Young People and the Arts Fellowship, will use the grant to collaborate with artists in Perth, regional Western Australia, Sydney and Townsville with the aim of creating a sustainable pathway to full time employment as a dance creator and educator.”

The Minister said other grants would go towards a range of projects.

“This includes Western Australian musician Ruby Boots travelling to the United States of America to support The Waifs during their North American tour, while Perth-based Aboriginal Art Centre Hub WA will represent its members at the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair 2016, and designer fashion label Wild Horses will use their grant to market their ‘Under the Wing’ collection,” he said.
