Premier’s Science Awards finalists announced

1Improving the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders; preventing serious respiratory diseases in children; and understanding fungal disease resistance in crops are just some of the research activities being undertaken by the finalists in the 2015 Premier’s Science Awards.

Premier and Science Minister Colin Barnett today announced the 13 finalists representing a broad cross-section of research and engagement activities being undertaken in the State.

“Science makes contributions to people’s lives on a daily basis. The finalists in this year’s awards have not only displayed outstanding achievements but have demonstrated the value science provides to industry, the community, infrastructure and the environment,” Mr Barnett said.

The Premier said the awards also increased public awareness of the range of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) engagement activities undertaken across the State

“The recently announced Science Statement for Western Australia identifies science education and engagement as an area of opportunity for the State. I am pleased that these awards recognise the important contributions of these activities and the role they play in inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in STEM,” he said.

Applications were judged by a panel chaired by the Chief Scientist of Western Australia, Professor Peter Klinken who said that the quality of entries received this year was exceptional.

“The high quality of entries should instil confidence in the future of science in this State,” Prof Klinken said.

“In the student category the judging panel was so impressed by the high calibre of applicants they recommended that four finalists were announced for this category.”

Winners and the 2015 inductee into the Science Hall of Fame will be announced at a ceremony on Thursday, August 20, during National Science Week, Australia’s largest annual celebration of science.

Mr Barnett thanked Chevron, ExxonMobil and Woodside for their continued support as sponsors of the awards.
