Major funding boost for local arts

The City is investing $200,000 to give five local arts and culture groups a huge boost.

The Accelerate Triennial Grants program will help build their capacity to grow and deliver high-quality cultural products for the community.

Mayor Tom Tate said the three-year funding would have an immediate impact.

“A key challenge for the cultural sector is the inability to make long-term plans due to the uncertainty of funding,” Cr Tate said.

“Providing longer-term grants gives our organisations and collectives the security to develop capacity and to be ambitious and bold in their creative endeavours.’’

The Accelerate Triennial Grants program is a legacy project for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and will ensure Gold Coast arts and culture makes a significant contribution to the Games and continues to flourish well beyond 2018.

Recipients of the grants are:

• The Walls Art Space – to serve as a hub of creative practice, critical dialogue and innovative thinking around contemporary art and to develop as a permanent exhibition platform that will become an essential destination for contemporary art and cultural experience on the Gold Coast.

• The Circus Corridor – to develop and future-proof the Gold Coast’s existing circus arts sector through a series of incubators, workshops, master-classes, showings and performances,  including the creation of new circus works that reflect the culture and identity of the region.

• Kate McDonald, Ian Pidd and Bec Reid – to establish a project-based company dedicated to the creation of high quality, participation based, contemporary performance and live art experiences made with and for the community, such asThe Inaugural Annual Dance Affair that premiered as part of Bleach* Festival 2015.

• Shock Therapy Productions – to assist in establishing the company as a local leader in the delivery of high quality, relevant, multi-disciplinary performance through developing a sustainable business strategy, creative development, website design and marketing.

• Swell Sculpture Festival – to strengthen public art in urban, industrial, coastal, mountainous and hinterland landscapes through building the capacity and sustainability of the organisation.
