Report to tackle youth domestic violence

A report entitled ‘The Making of Good Men and Women’ that responds to youth violence in the home was presented today to Child Protection Minister Helen Morton and Mining and Pastoral Region MLC Stephen Dawson on the steps of State Parliament.

“I share the concerns of Womens Health and Family Services and the need to address the more invisible aspect of domestic and family violence,” Mrs Morton said.

Women’s Health and Family Services is a not-for-profit organisation providing programs and services including domestic violence, drug, alcohol, and mental health support to women and their families.

“The State Government’s strong commitment to tackling youth violence in the home is reflected in Western Australia’s Family and Domestic Violence Prevention Strategy to 2022,” the Minister said.

“The strategy has a clear focus on young people, which includes prevention and early intervention initiatives aimed at promoting healthy relationships.

“The focus on young people is critical in combating the inter-generational cycle of family and domestic violence.

“The Youth Say No campaign which is part of the strategy also contains specific information for young people about family and domestic violence.

“The State Government has prioritised the need for support for families affected by family and domestic violence, including the co-ordination of services to respond to the complexity of adolescent violence in the home.

“I look forward to reading the report and thank the Womens Health and Family Services for its contribution to this important issue.”
