“I have developed enormous respect for the Commissioner and I’m delighted he has agreed to stay on,” Mr Baird said.

“Commissioner Scipione has the experience and has led this State through some of our darkest days.

“I’m sure the community and the NSW Police Force will welcome this extension, which will facilitate the transition to a new commissioner.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Troy Grant said the extension will allow the Government to work with the NSW Police Force to find the best possible replacement for Commissioner Scipione at the end of his term.

“Commissioner Scipione has been an excellent leader and we need to ensure the next NSW Police Commissioner can lead not only the best police force in the country, but also maintain public confidence,” Mr Grant said.

“I have worked closely with Mr Scipione both as a serving police officer and now as Minister and his experience will be an asset for the future of the NSW Police Force.

“I look forward to continuing to work closely with Commissioner Scipione and the entire NSW Police Force.”

Commissioner Scipione joined the NSW Police Force in 1980. This year marks his eighth year in the top job.

“This offer is a tremendous privilege. It’s an offer I took very seriously and that involved a discussion with my wife and family,” Mr Scipione said.

“I have accepted this extension because there are some challenges and opportunities for our State and law enforcement in particular.

“I know we have the men and women in our organisation who are up to the task. Giving them the greatest capacity to do their best is extremely important for me and for the community of this State. That’s my belief and that’s why I have agreed.”
