Say g’day to a farmer at the 2014 Sydney Royal Easter Show

49There is no better place than The Sydney Royal Easter Show (the Show) to learn about life on the farmand say g’day to a real Aussie farmer.

Every year, each Australian farmer produces enough food to feed 600 people: 150 in Australia and 450

overseas. Australian farmers produce almost 93 per cent of Australia’s daily domestic food supply

Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) General Manager Agriculture, Murray Wilton, said farmers from

all over the country travel to the Show each year with their animals and produce.

“This year we’re expecting over 14,000 animals and around 50,000 pieces of fresh fruit and vegetables at

the Show. The kids in particular will love the chance to learn how to shear a sheep, get up close to a cow

and mill their own grain in the Food Farm,” Mr Wilton said.

“I encourage all Showgoers to take a walk through the animal pavilions and chat to the farmers, visit the

impressive District Exhibits and the Farmyard Nursery where you can feed the baby animals.”

A popular attraction at the Show is the Working Dairy, run by Shannon Bennetts. Last year, dairy cows

were kept busy producing 16,000 litres of milk in the Working Dairy and Milking Barn display.

“It’s a great live show – we have a lot of fun with the audience and give them a taste of an authentic

commercial dairy,” Mr Bennetts said.

“People drink milk every day but don’t really understand the work that goes into making it drinkable.

Watching the show is like spending a day at the dairy farm and it’s a great learning experience for the

whole family.”

Another must-see is the Woolworths Fresh Food Dome – home to the Districts Exhibits. These towering

displays are the largest of their kind in the world with each display containing over 10,000 pieces of fruit,

vegetables and grains arranged in spectacular designs.
