Rains lash Chandigarh

Chandigarh and its surrounding areas in Punjab and Haryana received rainfall on Tuesday bringing the mercury down considerably. However, these were not pre-Monsoon showers, the Met office said.

The rains that started on Monday afternoon continued intermittently on Tuesday. The city recorded nearly 44 mm rainfall on Monday.

Chandigarh along with surrounding areas of Panchkula and Mohali, in Haryana and Punjab respectively, experienced showers later in the night as well.

On Monday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 35.5 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal.

The temperature recorded on Tuesday morning was 25.5 degrees Celsius.

Several parts of Punjab and Haryana also received rainfall on Tuesday.

On Monday, Amritsar got 20 mm of rain, while Ludhiana experienced three mm of rainfall.

The rains brought relief from the sweltering heat of the past few days. The Met office said there would be some more rain.

The pre-Monsoon showers were expected to hit the region between June 29 and July 1, they added.

Chandigarh and other places recorded maximum temperatures of above 40 degrees Celsius last week.

Hisar in Haryana was the hottest on June 14 at 44.3 degrees Celsius.
