Opposition leaders held for protesting against note ban

Opposition party activists were arrested on Monday in Tamil Nadu for protesting against the demonetisation of 500 and 1,000 rupee notes.

DMK Treasurer M.K. Stalin, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President S. Thirunavukkarasar and CPI-M Tamil Nadu Secretary G. Ramakrishnan were among those taken into custody.

Educational institutions, shops and other offices worked as usual across the state.

Speaking at the protest venue, Stalin said the DMK was not opposed to the November 8 demonetisation but was against the hardship caused to the common man in the wake an unprecedented cash crunch.

Thirunavukkarasar accused the central government of implementing the demonetisation scheme without any proper planning.
