Melbourne Stars launch Indian Republic Day Party

Multicultural Community Ambassadors from the Melbourne Indian and Sri Lankan communities attended the official launch of the inaugural Indian Republic Day Party, part of the Indian community night at the Melbourne Stars v Hobart Hurricane Big Bash League match on January 27, 2018

The Indian Republic Day party will feature an Indian community party on the MCG concourse including a “Indian Dance Off” featuring classical and modern dance groups supplied by a number of Melbourne Indian dance academies.  A number of Indian dance styles will be on display including Bhangra, Bollywood, South Asian, Gujarati and urban fusion.  The winning group will receive a prize of $1500.

Following the party in the MCG precinct, the Indian community will come together in a dedicated fan bay at the MCG to cheer on the Melbourne Stars in their match against the Hobart Hurricanes. During the match in stadium DJ will feature classic Indian songs to entertain the crowd.

In India, Republic Day is a public holiday on January 26 to celebrate India officially becoming an independent republic in 1950.  The day is marked with parties, parades, gifts of sweets and programs promoting the history and culture of India

Clint Cooper, CEO of the Melbourne Stars was the key speaker on the night and said: “On behalf of the Melbourne Stars, we look forward to welcoming the Indian community at the MCG for another great season of Big Bash.”

“The Republic Day party is a great addition to our calendar and we look forward to seeing the community celebrate at the greatest cricket ground in the world!”

Indian Community Ambassador Eshwar Lakavath said: “The Indian Republic Day party combines two of the Indian communities favourite passions – cricket and dancing to music,”

“We look forward to celebrating Indian Republic Day at the home of cricket in Australia.”

Tickets for the Melbourne Stars v Hobart Hurricanes are priced at $5 for children under 16, $15 Concession, $20 for Adults and $42.50 for a family of 4.

The Melbourne Stars Republic Day Party is part of a fan engagement program managed by Red Elephant multicultural agency including a Community Ambassador Program, Cultural Pulse Fan Clubs and a Facebook Event page.
