LIFE NOT ALL CRUISY ON THE HIGH SEAS

1413581726287_wps_37_The_cruise_ship_Carnival_Cruises are often pitched as an idyllic ocean getaway though they can run into troubled waters when things don’t always go to plan.

NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe warned people planning their summer holidays of the possible pitfalls of cruising.

“Although cruising is an increasingly popular way for people to holiday, it may not always be smooth sailing,” Mr Stowe said.

“Common complaints include accommodation or services not matching the description, not receiving promised on-board or land credit, or the ship not visiting promised destinations.”

In one instance reported to Fair Trading, a North West Sydney family was stuck on a summer cruise in a cabin with no air-conditioning. Due to heat the family could only spend a short time in their room during the day and were forced to sleep with the door open for fresh air.

Mr Stowe warned consumers to read the fine print and check if there were any other additional fees or payments required to be paid while on board or after the cruise.

Many cruise companies have their operations based overseas and depending where they are based additional and on-board charges can be in foreign currency.

Consumers also need to be aware that on-board purchases of goods, like art work, may involve contracts with third-party based in other countries which can be problematic should difficulties with delivery of goods arise post-cruise.

Although tipping isn’t common in Australia, compulsory tipping can be common on-board cruise ships with some companies requiring customers to pay an additional daily gratuity fee after the cruise.

Consumers are encouraged to purchase travel insurance prior to departure to ensure they are covered for any unforeseen losses that may occur.
