Lemurs will have more room to ‘Move it, Move it’ after a new $4.4 million Lemur Island exhibit was today unveiled at Melbourne Zoo.

Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith today opened the Lemur Island exhibit that allows visitors to step through an impressive woven tunnel and emerge into the wonderful and magical world of the cheeky lemur.

The Victorian Coalition Government has contributed $4 million towards the $4.4 million investment in Lemur Island, which has seen the entry to the Zoo transformed into a modern interactive experience.

“This exhibit is world leading, allowing visitors to get up close and personal with ring-tailed lemurs in an immersive experience to interact with these endearing animals,” Mr Smith said.

“This is a fantastic project and one that the Coalition Government is very proud to support.

“It is an incredible exhibit and one that will continue to keep Melbourne Zoo at the forefront of Zoological institutions around the world.”

Through Coalition Government funding, new exhibits and developments continue to open at Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary, offering visitors to Victoria’s zoos something different and exciting.

Lemur Island will house the bachelor troop of Ring-tailed Lemurs, a species native to Madagascar, from Saturday 21 December.
