Karzai among dignitaries to attend Nehru anniversary celebrations

6New Delhi, Nov 16 (IANS) Former Afghan president Hamid Karzai is among a host of international dignitaries who will attend the celebrations of India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s 125th birth anniversary, the Congress said here Sunday.

The conference, to be held at Vigyan Bhawan here, would be chaired by Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

There will be two parallel sessions in the conference namely ‘Inclusive Democracy and People’s Empowerment’ and ‘Nehru’s World View and a Democratic International Order for the 21st Century’, the party said in a release.

The other foreign dignitaries who would attend the conference include former president of Ghana John Kufour, former prime minister of Nepal Sher Bahadur Deuba and former secretary general of the Arab League Amre Moussa.

The Congress is organising this two-day international conference to resurrect Nehru’s legacy at a trying time for the party.

The party, however, has not invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and any other leaders from the ruling Bharartiya Janata Party for the event.
