Athletes from across Australia and the world are making their way to Jervis Bay ahead of the XTERRA Asia Pacific Championship this weekend with Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres today welcoming some of the sport’s international competitors to NSW.

The XTERRA Asia Pacific Championship, starting at Callala Beach on Saturday 18 April, includes open water swimming, mountain biking, and trail running.

A sprint distance off-road triathlon, half marathon, 5km trail run and free kids’ events will also take place throughout the weekend.

“It’s my pleasure to welcome athletes to NSW to compete in the XTERRA Asia Pacific Championship, proudly secured by the NSW Government through Destination NSW,” Mr Ayres said.

“Of the more than 400 athletes set to compete on the beaches and trails of Jervis Bay this weekend, about a quarter are from outside NSW, and more than half of the professional field will be coming from overseas.

“Foreign countries represented include Austria, Bermuda, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, UK and USA.

“The NSW Government is committed to securing a strong year-round calendar of sporting events for Regional NSW, and XTERRA is a great example of an event that utilises the natural assets of the region and showcases our State to participants and spectators from across the world,” Mr Ayres added.

Member for South Coast Shelley Hancock said Jervis Bay is a fitting location for XTERRA.

“Jervis Bay is renowned for its natural beauty, and visitors to the region this weekend are in for an absolute treat,” Ms Hancock said.

“I wish all competitors the best of luck and encourage those visiting Jervis Bay to explore the South Coast’s fantastic walks, cafes and restaurants while they are here.”
