Wanted gangster arrested in Delhi

1New Delhi, Oct 18 (IANS) A man accused of murder and kidnapping and named one of the three most wanted criminals of Delhi, was arrested here, police said Saturday.

Anil alias Leela who was wanted in numerous cases of murder, dacoity, kidnapping and extortion was arrested Friday from west Delhi’s Dwarka area after the police received a tip-off.

“When we signalled him to stop, he tried to flee in his car but we managed to arrest him,” a police officer said, adding that the accused fired two rounds at the police.

The police recovered an improvised pistol and three live cartridges from the SUV that Anil was driving.

According to police, the accused is a dropout from Delhi University and was a state-level weightlifter.

But as he wanted to make it big in the world of crime, he formed his own gang in 2010 and committed a series of kidnappings and murders.

“After successfully evading the police, the gang established itself in the National Capital Region, collecting protection money from bookies and settling property disputes,” said the officer.

The gang also murdered a retired inspector of Haryana Police in Rohtak.

The Delhi and the Haryana Police managed to arrest the remaining gang members but Anil continued to give them the slip by hiding in far-off states like Sikkim, Assam, West Bengal and even Nepal.
