In the midst of the AFL’s Multicultural Round, the West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) will today host a Cultural Diversity Breakfast at Patersons Stadium.

Citizenship and Multicultural Interests Minister Mike Nahan said that as the State’s population and cultural diversity grows, young migrants were increasing their participation in all aspects of football and revitalising the image of one of Australia’s finest sporting traditions.

Dr Nahan said the WAFC has made a strong commitment to multiculturalism and had been instrumental in increasing the involvement of migrants in football across the State.

“Through grassroots engagement and partnerships with culturally diverse communities, migrant resource centres, local clubs and schools, the WAFC has established programs which motivate community members to participate in football as players, spectators, club members and volunteers,” the Minister said.

“In 2014, the State Government awarded a $30,000 grant, through the Office of Multicultural Interests, to the WAFC’s multicultural community groups program which has resulted in new partnerships with Chinese, Indian and African community groups and this is highly commendable.

“The future horizons of WA football will be more inclusive, international and exciting. Migrant groups and the wider community will be strengthened and every West Australian can take pride in this initiative.”

The WAFC’s Cultural Diversity Breakfast promotes the message that Australian Rules football welcomes people from all backgrounds.
