A narcotics consignment seized in Jammu and Kashmir from a truck coming from Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-administered Kashmir Jan 17 was brown sugar, forensic scientists confirmed Wednesday.
After the seizure of 114 packets concealed under almonds, police arrested the truck driver and launched an investigation.
“Samples of the seized contraband items were sent to the forensic lab for tests. Today we received the lab report confirming that the contraband is brown sugar,” police told IANS.
Trade across the Line of Control (LoC) was disrupted Jan 17 after the arrest of the driver and seizure of the vehicle by India. Pakistani authorities later detained 27 drivers and their vehicles from India who had gone to Chakote near Muzaffarabad with trade goods.
Pakistan also refused entry to 48 of its own trucks, demanding the Indian authorities to release the arrested driver and allow the return of all 49 trucks that had come to the Salamabad trade centre in Baramulla district Jan 17.
Brig. (retd) Muhammad Ismail Khan, director general of trade and travel of Pakistan, told Indian officials during a meeting to resolve the deadlock that the Pakistani driver could not be arrested by India as he had diplomatic immunity.
Pakistan also said bus services between Uri-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawlakote would remain suspended till the deadlock is resolved.
