Sydney’s 27th ARIA awards celebrate Australian Music

NSW Minister for Tourism, Major Events and the Arts, George Souris, has congratulated the 27th ARIA Award winners, saying it was wonderful to see so many artists from around Australia celebrating their musical talents in Sydney, the home of the ARIA Awards and Australia’s major events capital.

“The NSW Government is pleased to support the 27th ARIA Awards and our second ARIA Week, which was a resounding success” Mr Souris said.

“Sydney is the vibrant, creative centre of the Australian music industry, and staging the ARIA Awards in our global city confirms NSW as the premier state for staging high profile creative industries events and the spiritual home of the music industry.

“The ARIAs have become Australian music’s night of nights, as artists, the industry and music fans come together to celebrate the very best our music scene has to offer.

“Last year, more than 3,000 international and domestic visitors came specifically to our Harbour City for the ARIA Awards and ARIA Week, injecting $1.4 million into the NSW economy”.

Mr Souris pointed out that according to the Live Performance Australia’s Ticket Attendance & Revenue Survey 2012(released Monday 29 July, 2013), NSW secured 37 per cent of Australia’s gross ticket revenue, totalling more than $446 million from live shows in 2012.

“This is the number one share of the Australian live performance industry (Victoria has 28.6 per cent), so NSW continues to enjoy the lion’s share for live performance in Australia. In the same year, NSW also secured more than $166 million in gross ticket revenue from contemporary music performances.

“I congratulate all 27th ARIA Award winners and wish them, and the Australian music industry, a successful and prosperous year ahead.”

Denis Handlin AM, ARIA Chairman and Chairman & CEO of Sony Music Entertainment Australia & New Zealand and President, Asia said: “The 27th Annual ARIA Awards were truly a great celebration of Australian music across a wide range of, genres, brilliant artists and performances.

“It was also an honour to induct Air Supply into the ARIA Hall of Fame and to remember the lives of two special artists lost to our industry in the past 12 months.

ARIA CEO Dan Rosen said: “2013 has been a remarkable year for Australian music and that was certainly evident with the wealth of talent present at the ARIA’s. The collection of winners and performers highlights the amazing talent in the Australian music industry and ARIA is proud to be able to present these artists to the Australian public and celebrate their achievements.

“ARIA congratulates all of tonight’s winners, in particular Tame Impala, Flume, Guy Sebastian and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds who all won multiple ARIA Awards.”
