The world spotlight will be on Sydney in June 2019 when the global robotics community competes in the RoboCup International Symposium and World Championship at the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney). 

Beating stiff international competition, Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres said Business Events Sydney (BESydney) partnered with UNSW Australia, RoboCupJunior Australia and Bastion Collective to win the $7 million event.

“RoboCup celebrates developments in artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing, unlocking exciting jobs for future generations, while generating $7 million direct expenditure for our economy,” Mr Ayres said.

“It’s 19 years since Australia last hosted this event. The new state-of-the-art ICC Sydney will display local ingenuity and technology, making Sydney the perfect host city for 2019.”

Chief Executive of BESydney, Lyn Lewis-Smith said winning the bid would pay dividends for Sydney.

“RoboCup draws over 2,000 participants, 400-600 teams and up to 20,000 spectators over six days. It will provide global exposure for Australia with substantial international media coverage showcasing Sydney on the world stage,” Ms Lewis-Smith said.

RoboCup was established in 1997 with a mission to field robots capable of beating the FIFA World Cup champions by 2050.

RoboCupJunior will promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers to young Australians, with over 500 international students due to compete in Sydney.

RoboCupJunior Australia facilitates the largest robotics based technology events for school aged children nationally.
