Mental Health Minister Helen Morton has announced a range of new initiatives to boost suicide prevention in Western Australia.

Speaking at the Suicide Prevention Australia conference in Perth last night, the Minister announced the launch of a new online resource hub for communities and health professionals, and the appointment of four new representatives to the Ministerial Council for Suicide Prevention.

Mrs Morton said the newly developed One Life WA website would showcase the work done as part of the State Government’s Suicide Prevention Strategy, and provide the community with an information hub dedicated to suicide prevention in WA.

“It features information for families, workplaces, young people and Aboriginal communities on how to get help; as well as information on small grants and training, news and events, and resources,” she said.

“It is also interactive, with videos and personal stories.”

The Minister also announced four new members for the Ministerial Council for Suicide Prevention. She said it was fitting that representatives on the ministerial council came from a range of different backgrounds, including business, farming, health administration and mental health – because suicide was a topic that affected everyone.

“I am pleased to say that Rio Tinto’s Chief Executive – Iron Ore, Andrew Harding, has accepted an invitation to join the ministerial council, along with Hyden farmer Jane Mouritz and Western Australian Association for Mental Health president, Alison Xamon,” she said.

“Senior health administrator Dr Neil Fong will consolidate the council’s leadership by serving as the deputy chairman. I warmly welcome each of the new members and look forward to receiving their advice on suicide prevention initiatives and services throughout the State.”

Mrs Morton thanked outgoing council members, Wheatbelt farmer Brian Mayfield, Aboriginal advocate Adele Cox and author and youth representative Josh Cuniffe for their time and commitment while on the council.
