Storm Safety Doesn’t End with the Storm Season

The peak storm season is now over, but the Strathfield SES (NSW SES) Unit is urging locals to take the time now to ensure their homes are storm-ready.

“Just because there isn’t a storm coming today doesn’t mean that storm safety shouldn’t be everybody’s priority,” Strathfield SES Deputy Local Controller Joanne Gianotto said.

“Issues uncovered during the peak storm season (between October 1 and March 31) are best fixed during clearer weather and when contractors are more likely to be available.  These can include leaking downpipes, low hanging branches, or poor yard drainage that causes minor flooding.

“Now is also the best time to clean your gutters, check your roof, and make sure your insurance is up to date.”

Ms Gianotto thanked the Strathfield SES volunteers for their service across the 2015 / 2016 storm season.

“I’m proud that our 30 Strathfield SES volunteers responded to 56 requests for assistance, volunteering a collective 889 operational hours in the field.

“Many of our volunteers have other jobs or study commitments outside the SES and are often on-call after a full day at work.  In my mind, they are the true heroes this storm season.

“Strathfield residents can show their appreciation for our SES volunteers by wearing orange to work on ‘WOW Day’ (Wear OrangeWednesday) on May 11.”

“We’re always looking for new volunteers to join our SES Unit.  Anybody interested should call us on (02) 9673 2144,” she said.

Some of the things people can do to be prepared include:

  • Maintain your yard and balcony
  • Clean your gutters
  • Trim overhanging branches
  • Make sure your roof is in good condition
  • Check your insurance is up to date
  • Make an emergency plan
  • Prepare an emergency kit (for if you lose power or need to leave home in a hurry)
