Smarter choices when buying appliances

Environment Minister Rob Stokes today launched a new app to help consumers save money and energy when buying appliances.

“This app is the easiest way to compare the purchase price of an appliance versus its life-time running cost, giving you a direct comparison of potential dollar savings from different models,” Mr Stokes said.

“The NSW Government has designed this app to help families and consumers potentially save hundreds of dollars a year on their utility bills by choosing more energy efficient appliances.

RMYC“The app demonstrates that purchasing a 5 star washing machine rather than an average 2.5 star model could save more than $1,000 on running costs over the life of the appliance.

“Progressing from a 400 litre, 2 star fridge to a 6 star model could save a consumer $760 on running costs over its life time and reduce unnecessary electricity demand.

“The free app is backed by an online partnership with NSW retailers who have the web version of the app available on their websites to directly address consumers’ needs when shopping online or researching a product.

The app is a collaborative initiative between Sustainability Victoria and the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, with more than 400 appliance, hardware and lighting retailers supporting the Smarter Choice Program.

The Smarter Choice app is available from both the Apple and Play online stores.

Smarter Choice information is available at Bunnings, David Jones, Harvey Norman, Myer, the Good Guys, JB Hi-Fi, Betta Electrical, Home Hardware and Thrifty Link.
