Minister for Local Government Paul Toole today announced the opening of applications for the Responsible Pet Ownership Grants Program.

 Mr Toole joined thousands of animal lovers and their dogs in the RSPCA’s Million Paws Walk launch to support the fight against animal cruelty.

 “The Million Paws Walk is a fantastic community fundraising event to support animals in the RSPCA’s care,” Mr Toole said.

 “It’s a great day to talk about responsible pet ownership and work towards reducing the number of sick, injured, neglected and abandoned pets.”

 As part of the Responsible Pet Ownership Grants Program, individual councils can apply for grants of up to $15,000, and collaborative council projects can receive up to $50,000 for initiatives developed in partnership with community groups.

 “The Responsible Pet Ownership Grants Program supports local councils to tackle important issues such as dealing with menacing and dangerous dogs in the community, and reducing dog attacks,” Mr Toole said.

 “It also deals with issues such as managing feral cats as well as teaching young children about animal behaviour.”

 Mr Toole said the NSW Government had committed $900,000 over three years towards the program.

 “The importance of these programs cannot be understated. Initiatives like subsidised desexing for pets, discounted microchipping and education programs for children about dogs sees innumerable benefits to people and pets alike,” said RSPCA NSW CEO Steve Coleman.
