Matthew Mason-Cox med rel: Consumers warned of wheat bag fire risk

1NSW Minister for Fair Trading Matthew Mason-Cox today warned residents to be vigilant with wheat bags and heat packs following two related fire incidents last week.

Mr Mason-Cox said it was important for consumers to be aware of the dangers associated with wheat bags and other heat pack products including plush toys containing wheat.

“These products should never be used to warm beds or in spaces where heat can’t escape,” he said.

Last week, Fire & Rescue NSW firefighters responded to two wheat bag or heat pack related fires.

Fire & Rescue NSW Assistant Commissioner Mark Whybro said “on Monday, 14 July, firefighters from Narrabeen responded to a fire in Collaroy Plateau where an elderly lady was using a homemade heat pack – she had heated it for more than 20 minutes in the microwave, when it caught fire.

“On Wednesday, 16 July, firefighters from Maroubra responded to a similar incident in South Coogee.”

So far this year, firefighters have responded to at least eight wheat bag or heat pack related fires, he said. “Wheat and other grain products are combustible at high temperatures, and if grain-filled heat packs are used incorrectly, it can ignite and start a fire. People should avoid using homemade heat packs.’’

Mr Mason-Cox said “wheat bags can be an effective way to treat persistent aches and pains however it is absolutely essential these products are used according to the manufacturers’ instructions.”

Fire & Rescue NSW wheat bag safety tips:
Make sure the wheat bag or heat pack you buy comes with instructions. Follow them carefully, especially when heating. Wheat bags can easily overheat in microwaves causing them to ignite.
Don’t leave the wheat bag or heat pack unsupervised in the microwave.
When heating a wheat bag in a microwave, always place a ¾ full glass of water next to it. This ensures the bag doesn’t dry out and overheat.
Don’t reheat or store a wheat bag until it’s properly cooled.
Only use wheat bags for direct application to body aches and pains – they should not be used as bed warmer.
Regularly check your wheat bag for signs of wear and tear or scorching. With age the fillings dry out and become combustible.
· If your wheat bag begins to smoulder or catches fire ring Triple Zero (000).
