Man carrying wife’s body: Odisha says it won’t recur

Amid nationwide outrage over a tribal man walking 10 km with his wife’s body on his shoulders in Odisha’s Kalahandi district, the state government on Saturday said such incidents would not get repeated in future.

“The state government is concerned over the unfortunate incident. We are working so that such incidents do not recur in future,” Odisha Health minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak said.

He said action would be taken against the hospital staff if they are found guilty.

Meanwhile, Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan criticised the state government and said the incident has maligned the image of Odisha.

“Kalahandi incident has maligned Odisha’s image. The incident shows the insensitivity of the state administration towards the people of the state. Both the state and the district administrations should take the matter very seriously and introspect,” Pradhan said.

The Kalahandi BJP unit staged a demonstration before the Bhawanipatna CDMO office protesting the incident. The members of the saffron party staged a silent protest by covering their faces with black badges.

The Kalahandi Congress unit put up a road block at the district headquarters town of Bhawanipatna during the day.

A six-member fact-finding team of the Congress led by former MP Pradeep Majhi on Saturday visited the spot to enquire about the incident.
