Kejriwal, Jung to meet police chief over rise in rapes

arvind kejriwal delhi 200Following a sexual assault on a Danish woman, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Wednesday said he and Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung will meet Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi to analyse the cause of rapes in the capital.

Kejriwal said he will also request the chief justice of India to set up more fast-track courts to ensure strict punishment to culprits of rape.

“I met the Lt. Governor and we decided to meet the police commissioner next week. There is a need to analyse the causes of rapes in Delhi. We need to find out the solution,” he said.

The Aam Aadmi Party leader said the three will discuss whether rapes in Delhi were locality-specific or person-specific.

“Though ensuring post-rape justice is a must, why does rape happen at all? And why so many rapes are happening in Delhi,” Kejriwal told reporters.

He also said rapes cannot be blamed on the morality of the society.

“We cannot say that morality of the city has gone down. If morality has gone down in all cities, why is Delhi witnessing so many rape cases,” he said.

The Danish woman, who came to India Jan 1, went to visit a museum Tuesday afternoon but lost her way to her hotel in Paharganj, a tourist hub in the heart of Delhi.

Around 4 p.m., a group of men lured her to an isolated spot where she was robbed of her iPad and cash and then raped, the woman told police.
