Kashmir governor’s address to legislature disrupted

omar 1There was chaos on the first day of the Jammu and Kashmir legislature’s budget session Monday as opposition members disrupted Governor N.N. Vohra’s address, forcing him to cut it short.

Legislators of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the Bharatiya Janata Party and an Independent interrupted Vohra’s address raising the issues of the alleged sexual assault by an ex-minister and the setting up of new administrative units in the state.

Opposition members alleged that the state government is trying to protect the accused ex-minister, Shabir Ahmad Khan, as police had been unable to arrest him even four days after the registration of an FIR against him.

Following pandemonium, the governor stopped his address and later cut it short.

The speaker of the legislative assembly and the chairman of the legislative council later laid copies of the governor’s address on the table of the two houses.
