IITs to adopt 10 villages

New Delhi, Oct 30 (IANS) All the IITs will adopt 10 villages each and help the government to develop a model for their development as a part of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, an official said Friday.

“The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi held workshops few months back for Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, meant for developing rural India. According to the initiative, each IIT will get 10 villages to take care of. They will gauge the problems of the villages and find solutions,” said IIT-Delhi director R.K. Shevgaonkar at a press conference.

The scheme will be launched by the ministry of human resource development next month.

“The IITs will create development models and help the government to work for the villages,” said Shevgaonkar.

“We will have double the number of students getting their Ph.D. degree in two years because we are focusing on making research more mainstream. We want to define research in a way that aligns with the progress of the country,” said S.K. Gupta, dean students’ affairs, IIT-Delhi.
