Health ministry intensifying drugs treatment programme

3New Delhi, Dec 19 (IANS) The health ministry is intensifying the drugs treatment programme on the evidence of United Nations’s Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) Programme, an official said Friday.

“MMT is currently available at United Nation Office on Drugs and Control-supported five model centers across the country like civil hospital in Kapurthala and Bathinda in Punjab and Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Manipur,” K.C. Samaria, joint health secretary said.

MMT is a universally accepted treatment option for those dependent on opioids drugs. MMT improves the well being and social functioning of drug users.

He was speaking at a meeting organised by the health ministry that brought together senior policy makers, academicians, activists, survivors of drugs problem and international development partners to deliberate and arrive at a consensus on the proposed plan of action.
