Grand celebration of Colourful and vibrant floral festival of Telangana : Bathukamma

‘Bathukamma’, a colourful and vibrant floral festival of Telangana celebrated by women with flowers is now part of global celebrations wherever the people of Telangana are settled.  On 23rd September, 2017 the same was celebrated in a grand manner in Sydney – Australia @ Belhaven Manor in Wentworthville where more than 500 people especially women and children were seen enthusiastically participating in the preparations of Bhatukamma and the prayers offered by people dancing and singing.

President of Sydney Bathukamma Team Mr. Anil Munagala led the entire event successfully, ladies and young girls were seen dressed in traditional clothes. They prepared a beautiful bathukamma (floral display) in 10 layers to symbolize the 10 districts of the proposed Telangana state in India. This colourful and vibrant floral festival of Bathukamma was witnessed by foreign residents who were fascinated by the rich and vibrant Telangana culture and its people along with local political leaders – Hon. Mr Matt Kean MP (Minister of State Innovation & Better Regulation), Mr Hugh McDermott MP (Member for Prospect) and Ms Jodi Mckay (Member of the Legislative Assembly).

The chief guests were asked to light the lamp and unveiled the logo of the Association and they later shared their views on the bathukamma festival and its integration into multicultural Australia and the importance of flowers used in Bathukamma have a great quality of purifying water and such flowers when immersed in abundance in a pond, it have the effect of cleansing water and making the environment much better.

At 5.30pm, the bathukamma display was carried to Parramatta lake. After a small prayerful dance by the ladies the bathukamma was floated into the lake. General Secretary of Sydney Bathukamma Team Mr. Sumesh Reddy Surya shared the long-term vision to make this festival as Parramatta council annual event.

The festival heralds the beauty of nature, collective spirit of Telangana people and also the scientific approach of the agrarian people towards preserving the resources of nature in a celebrative way.
