Government welcomes IBAC’s report

2The Government welcomes IBAC’s report on its first full year of operations.
The report demonstrates the valuable work being undertaken by IBAC. The report shows the
importance of Victoria having an independent, broad-based anti-corruption commission with
strong powers to investigate serious corruption, which the Coalition Government has
established after Labor failed to do so during their eleven years in office.
The Government also welcomes IBAC’s suggestions for possible amendments to the Act.
The report reaffirms IBAC’s confidence that the legislation has provided a solid initial
framework for Victoria’s new integrity regime, with possible improvements based on
experience being identified after the legislation has been applied in practice.
The Government shares this view. We have previously made clear our intention to monitor
the operation of the IBAC legislation and to take into account any feedback received from the
IBAC Commissioner and the Parliamentary Committee regarding possible amendments.
The various possible amendments suggested by IBAC are consistent with the Government’s
long-held view that IBAC’s role should be to focus its investigative resources and powers on
tackling serious corruption.
The Government will now carefully consider the various recommendations and suggestions
made by IBAC.
