Outgoing Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Varghese has every reason to be proud of what has been a distinguished career in the public service of Australia, Minister for Trade and Investment Andrew Robb said today.
Mr Varghese will stand down from his role next July to take up a new role as Chancellor of the University of Queensland.
“Peter is held in the highest regard for the quality of his advice, for his keen strategic insights regarding international affairs and also for his decency,” Mr Robb said.
He served as an outstanding High Commissioner to India (2009-12) and helped build positive momentum in the relationship we today enjoy with the world’s biggest democracy and also served as the Director General of the Office of National Assessments (2004-09).
“Peter has shown strong leadership throughout my time in the Trade and Investment portfolio during a landmark period which has seen us conclude free trade agreements with Korea, Japan and China and also the successful conclusion of the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP),” Mr Robb said.
“I wish Peter every success during the next stage of his career for which he is perfectly equipped for.”
