Congress to move SC over Trinamool’s protest against CBI

Kolkata, Sep 159 (IANS) Claiming that the Trinamool Congress’ protest demonstration against the CBI here was tantamount to contempt of court, the Congress Sunday said it will move the Supreme Court over the issue.

Accusing the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the centre of using the CBI as a political tool, Trinamool leader and West Bengal Law Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya led a demonstration against the agency which is probing the multi-crore-rupee Saradha scam.

Condemning the demonstrations, Congress leader Abdul Mannan – instrumental in filing the petition which eventually led to the Supreme Court order the CBI probe – said he will again move the apex court.

“While ordering the CBI to probe the scam, the Supreme Court had directed the state government to cooperate in the investigation. But by holding demonstrations, the state government has disregarded the court and it is tantamount to its contempt,” said Mannan.

“We will again move the Supreme Court seeking arrest of the law minister as well as the chief minister (Mamata Banerjee) who appointed her,” added Mannan.

Probing the scam, the CBI has so far arrested four people including former Bengal top police officer and Trinamool leader Rajat Majumdar. The agency also grilled several people, including a former aide of a ruling party leader.

Facing widespread criticism over the alleged involvement of Trinamool leaders, party chief and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the Modi government of using the CBI as a political tool.
